Hydraulic Pipes Buying Guide: Materials, Grades and Standards Explained
How to pick the right hydraulic pipe for your circuit — material, grade, pressure rating, and the standards every Indian buyer should know.

Hydraulic pipes carry pressurised fluid between pumps, valves and actuators. Picking the wrong pipe is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes on a hydraulic build: a pipe that leaks, bursts or corrodes can take a whole machine offline. This guide walks through how we help OEMs and MRO buyers in India choose the right hydraulic pipe.
Step 1 — Start with working pressure, not size
Before you compare suppliers, write down two numbers: peak working pressure (in bar or MPa) and surge pressure. Most hydraulic circuits in mobile and industrial equipment operate in the 70–350 bar range, with surge spikes pushing 30–40% higher. The pipe you choose must comfortably survive the surge — typically a 4:1 safety factor on burst pressure.
Step 2 — Choose the material family
For most factory and mobile-hydraulic applications, the choice is between cold-drawn seamless steel and welded (ERW) tube. Seamless gives you a uniform wall and higher burst margin; ERW costs less and is fine for medium-pressure auxiliary lines. Stainless and copper-alloy variants exist for corrosive or marine duty but cost 3–6× more.
- Cold-drawn seamless (E235, E355, ST52) — the workhorse for 250+ bar lines
- ERW (welded) tube — good for return lines and lower-pressure circuits
- Stainless 304 / 316 — chemical, food, marine, and high-temperature systems
Step 3 — Check the standard, not just the grade
Indian buyers often see three standards quoted side-by-side: DIN 2391 (Germany, cold-drawn precision tubes), ASTM A106 (USA, high-temp seamless) and IS 3601 (India, low-temp service). They are not interchangeable. DIN 2391 controls outside diameter and wall thickness much more tightly — important for compression fittings to seal correctly.
If your assembly uses bite-type or DIN 2353 compression fittings, ask for DIN 2391/C tubes specifically. The tighter OD tolerance is what makes those fittings seal.
Step 4 — Surface finish matters for cylinder bores
If the pipe will be used as a hydraulic cylinder barrel, the inner surface finish drives seal life. We supply ready-to-honed tubes (also called skived & roller-burnished, or SRB) at an Ra of 0.2–0.4 µm so the cylinder builder can skip rough honing entirely.
Step 5 — Plan your supply chain
